How Strong Safety Cultures Improve Workers’ Compensation Outcomes

Rockwood leaders share how collaboration and field expertise help reduce risk.

In a recent LinkedIn Live, Rockwood Casualty leaders discussed how strong safety cultures help reduce workers’ compensation risk and strengthen partnerships between brokers, carriers and insureds. Their message was simple: Better communication and proactive safety practices lead to better long-term outcomes.

  • Safety culture changes the relationship. Dustin King, SVP, Workers’ Compensation Underwriting, said that strong safety cultures shift the conversation beyond pricing and coverage. “You’re talking about how to improve outcomes together,” he said. That collaboration helps brokers, carriers and insureds align around long-term performance rather than short-term transactions.
  • Field experience matters. Rebecca Wagner, Loss Control Director, emphasized the importance of being on site and understanding how businesses actually operate. “The insured knows their business best, and we want to hear that story,” she said. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, Rockwood works alongside clients to build practical, sustainable safety programs.
  • Small details reveal bigger safety trends. Wagner noted that issues like slips, trips and falls often point to broader operational habits. Housekeeping, equipment maintenance and leadership engagement can all signal whether safety is truly embedded in a company’s culture.
  • Commitment matters more than perfection. King said Rockwood looks for businesses actively working to improve. “Past performance really matters, but if a company’s engaged in focusing on getting better, that’s what drives long-term success,” he said. Companies that prioritize continuous improvement are often the strongest long-term partners.

Safety culture is more than compliance — it’s a long-term investment in better outcomes for employees, brokers and insureds alike.
